The portrait has been one of man’s most rendered subjects. 26,000 years ago, a woman’s face was carved into mammoth bone, and we have come a long way since then. Through sculpture, oils, acrylics, pastels, water colours, pencils, ink, acrylic and digital we have advanced the form a great deal.
Figure and portrait painting is one of my favourite subjects, though I must admit it’s one I struggle with.
I constantly track down what I think is inspiring contemporary portraits, and would love to share some of these works with you.
I should mention that my tastes in portrait painting and art tend towards the more abstract, but I do love the work of such artists as John Singer Sargent for example.
I hope you enjoy the selection. Feel free to leave comments, and let me know your thoughts or if you have artists or works that you feel are exceptional examples of inspiring contemporary portraits.
